The Art of Karen Matson
Karen Matson is an artist and art educator who intellectually understands the principles of good design yet doesn’t necessarily honor them in her own work. For Karen, it’s all about bold, in-your-face color and form. Her subjects are often floral in nature, but when Karen and her husband purchased their first Airstream several years ago, she began to see how the contrast of something shiny, man-made, and definitely iconic could pair quite nicely with the glorious colors of nature.
For her Giclée and Metal Prints, Karen begins with her own unique Airstream-themed photographs (as well as a few great ones from others), then applies various effects and meticulously modifies the images to create vibrant, striking artwork in color and black & white.
Karen graduated from Western Michigan University with a BA and MA in Art Education. She taught Art in public schools and at the college level for over 35 years. Currently, she holds workshops and classes at the local art institute and in her home studio and has exhibited in galleries and juried art shows.
Karen and her husband live in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and spend summers in their (second) Airstream on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan near the resort town of South Haven, going on Airstreaming adventures whenever possible.
